Why re-reading your notes feels like studying and isn't
Re-reading is the most popular study method and one of the weakest. Here is what the evidence says, why it fools you, and five ways to replace it that cost no extra time.

Ask a hall of students how they revise and most will say some version of "I read over my notes". It is the default because it is comfortable, it is easy to start, and it produces a strong feeling of familiarity. That feeling is the problem.
Fluency is not knowledge
When you read a page for the third time, it goes down smoothly. Your brain reads that smoothness as I know this. Researchers call it the fluency illusion, and it is the reason confident students walk out of exams shocked.
The test the illusion fails is simple: close the page and say the content out loud. If you can't, you didn't know it — you recognised it. Recognition is a much weaker form of memory than recall, and exams almost never ask for recognition alone.
What works instead
The alternative is active recall: producing the answer from memory before checking it. In study after study, students who spend part of their time testing themselves outperform students who spend all of their time reviewing, even when the testing group sees the material less. The effect is large enough that it has a name — the testing effect — and it holds for facts, procedures, and conceptual material.
The mechanism is roughly what the spacing effect relies on: the effort of retrieval is what strengthens the memory. Reading is input. Recall is the exercise.
Five replacements that cost no extra time
You do not need more hours. You need the same hours arranged so that you are producing rather than consuming.
1. Blank-page recall
Close everything. Write down everything you can remember about the topic on a blank page — headings, definitions, diagrams, formulas, in any order. Then open your notes and mark, in a different colour, what you missed.
Ten minutes of this tells you more about your actual state of knowledge than an hour of reading, and the gaps you find are exactly your revision list. Do it before you revise a topic, not after; it's uncomfortable, and that's the point.
2. Turn every heading into a question
Your notes are already structured. Convert each heading into something you must answer:
- "Photosynthesis — light-dependent reactions" becomes What are the inputs and outputs of the light-dependent reactions, and where in the chloroplast do they happen?
- "Causes of the 1929 crash" becomes Name four causes of the 1929 crash and rank them by how much of the collapse each explains.
Now your notes are a question bank instead of a text to be re-read. This one change converts passive material into active material with no new writing.
3. Explain it to someone who will interrupt
Say the topic out loud, in full sentences, to a person or an empty room. Where you hesitate, hedge, or say "and then it sort of just happens", you have found a hole in your understanding rather than your memory — a different problem, and one re-reading definitely won't fix.
The version of this that works best is explaining to someone one year behind you. They ask the naive questions ("but why does it move?") that expose the parts you have memorised without understanding.
4. Practise the exam's verbs, not just its topics
Look at a past paper and note the instruction words: derive, compare, evaluate, calculate, justify. Each demands a different performance. A student who can recite every fact about two poems can still fail a compare question, because comparing is a skill that has to be rehearsed separately.
So for each topic, do at least one attempt in the form the exam will ask for — under time, closed book, written out properly. Not a plan. The whole thing.
5. Interleave instead of blocking
Blocked practice is doing twenty derivative problems in a row. Interleaved practice is mixing derivatives, integrals, and limits in one set. Blocked practice feels better and produces worse exam performance, because in the exam nobody tells you which method the question wants — and choosing the method is most of the difficulty.
Mix topics within a session. Expect it to feel harder and your accuracy to drop. That is the sign it is working.
When re-reading is the right call
Re-reading is not useless, it is just misplaced. It is genuinely the right move when:
- you are meeting material for the first time and need a rough map before you can question it;
- your notes are from someone else and you don't yet know what's in them;
- you are checking a specific fact you already tried and failed to recall.
The rule of thumb: read once to understand, then never read to revise.
A concrete week
Suppose you have five topics and five evenings, an hour each. The passive version reads all five, twice. Here is the active version:
- Monday — blank-page recall on topics 1 and 2, then fill gaps from notes. Write questions for both.
- Tuesday — same for topics 3, 4, 5.
- Wednesday — answer Monday's questions closed-book. Log every miss with one line on why you missed it.
- Thursday — one full past-paper question per topic, timed, mixed order.
- Friday — re-answer only the questions you missed on Wednesday and Thursday, then a second blank page on your weakest topic.
Same five hours. The difference is that by Friday you have a list of what you don't know, and you have already practised the thing the exam will actually ask you to do.
The uncomfortable summary
Active recall works because it is harder. Any study method that feels smooth is probably measuring your familiarity with the page rather than building your memory of the content. If you finish a session feeling slightly stupid and with a written list of your own gaps, it was a good session.
